Book Nine: John Matthew’s Story
Readers have flocked to the “raw, gritty…genre-bending”* novels of J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. Now return to that seductive- and dangerous- night world as the fever rises in the war between the vampires and slayers.
|In the darkest corners of the night in Caldwell, New York, a conflict like no other rages. Long divided as a terrifying battleground for the vampires and their enemies, the city is home to a band of brothers born to defend their race: the warrior vampires of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.
John Matthew has come a long way since he was found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown to himself and to those around him. After he was taken in by the Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was- or his true identity. Indeed, the fallen Brother Darius has returned, but with a different face and a very different destiny. As a vicious personal vendetta takes John into the heart of the war, he will need to call up on both who he is now and who he once was in order to face off against evil incarnate.
Xhex, a symphath assassin, has long steeled herself against the attraction between her and John Matthew. Having already lost one lover to madness, she will not allow the male of worth to fall prey to the darkness of her twisted life. When fate intervenes, however, the two discover that love, like destiny, is inevitable between soul mates.
Lover Mine, book nine in J.R. Ward’s BDB series, was my second read and the book that really got me craving more of the Brotherhood–and sad to say that crave was not satisfied until months later, because my friend kept forgetting to find the books. But anyways, Lover Mine was definitely a great read. It got me to start understanding just how this Brotherhood thing worked, and it got my feelings sucked in so much, I teared up. I’m a crier, and I’m not afraid to say it. I love a book that can make me cry–see Rhage and Mary, I was bawling. But Lover Mine is about John and Xhex, and boy are they a real good couple.
How many stars: 4 1/2
Main Characters: John Matthew and Xhex are the main character, and they are both broken and frustrating, but like all heroes and heroines the baggage is expected. But John is so determined and he is so in love with her its absolutely powerful. His love and his willingness to fight until he gets her back or avenge her is so compelling you cant help but turn the pages. Its not new in a story, but when you get to know John, it all seems a little different. Xhex is complicated, but you have to love her, because under that I’m a bad ass-which she is- theres that little flower that needs some TLC. And I wanted to give her some TLC along with john.
Story: The story is fun. The plot is filled with a great deal of juicy tidbits, aside from the main story, that just keeps you turning the page. The story developed at a nice pace and John and Xhex are so good together.
Improvements: I really loved Lover Mine, but I still thought there could have been a little improvement, though this is just my thought. Well its not improvements so much as a little more clearing up, especially about John’s Identity.
Topping: Hmm this was definitely a very nice, perfectly blended frappuccino, with light whip and about medium amount of extra caramel to make it just good enough your tempted for more.
